Horton Heat, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, the Aquabats, the Smooths, Bad Religion, Save Ferris, the Specials, Deftones, US Bombs, CIV, Swingin' Utters, Kid Rock, Unwritten Law, et al. Symposium balances such moments,however, with such less sanguine rockers as "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" and the ska-tinged "Puddles." All appearing Friday in the Warped Tour at RFK Stadium with Rancid, NOFX, The Rev. "We drink the sunshine/ That is heaven sent," exults one song. Despite a few snappy songs and the occasional crashing chord, Symposium cultivates that "big-rock" sound that characterizes such bands as the Verve: sweeping dynamics, surging refrains, yearning vocals, psychedelic sentiments.
This British quintet is punky enough to open its "On the Outside" with a song titled "The Answer to Why I Hate You," but the band's instincts are not that far distant from today's Britpop mainstream.
The Warped bands are overwhelmingly American, which makes Symposium an interesting addition to the bill. The dominant mode is Latin, but any band that would begin a title like "Super Bowl Sundae" with sitar-styled guitar is clearly unafraid of loading its music with diverse embellishments. This group too has a three- piece horn section, but also a turntable scratcher and a Japanese tabla player. Rapper Chali 2na dominates such tracks as "Cut Chemist Suite" and "O Le Le," while "Cumbia de Los Muertos" dances with the dead atop a Caribbean beat. Such songs as the opening "Como Ves" brings Santana into the punk-funk era, but that's just the beginning of this 10-member group's experiments. L.A.'s Ozomatli adds Latin, Afro-Cuban and hip-hop elements to the ska-punk recipe, yielding a pungent but sometimes overdone style on its self-titled major-label debut. The result is frantic but good-natured, even when the band is skewering high school "imbeciles" and "hypocrites" in the title tune.

This Southern California group's infectious energy is fueled by a three-piece horn section, and its spirit evokes rock's un-self-conscious early days: The septet's "The Band Geek Mafia" even ends with a cover of the Cadets's anachronistic 1956 hit, "Stranded in the Jungle." But the band seldom switches to ska's bouncy beat, preferring to ride at full gallop such jokey songs as "Hit a Guy With Glasses" and "Love Letter" ("I wrote her this love letter/ But she don't know how to read"). The Voodoo Glowskulls sound like a ska-punk band without the ska. Of the 30 bands playing this year's Warped Tour, many are more playful than belligerent, and at least one is wildly eclectic. The acceptance of ska, however, has opened the audience to a wide variety of styles.
The "skatepunk" scene-makers used to mosh to only one kind of music: fast, simple and hard.
